Recently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a warning about the security risks of Smart (internet-connected) TVs. As many of them have microphones and cameras, the FBI warns that these TVs can allow TV manufacturers and app developers to monitor people. They also noted that these TVs could allow hackers to
- change channels/volume
- play inappropriate videos
- cyberstalk individuals through its camera/microphone
The FBI has provided a number of tips for locking down these TVs including
- searching online for the TV model and its features (microphone, camera, privacy settings)
- not depending on its default security settings
- carefully reading privacy policies
