Coalition Backs Nebraska Bill LB 602 to Give Consumers One-Click Data Deletion

Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, Consumer Reports and others support NE LB 602

We're excited to support Nebraska's new Delete Act (LB 602), which would give Nebraskans a powerful tool to protect their privacy: the ability to delete their information from data brokers' databases with one click. The bill builds on California's Delete Act, which we proudly cosponsored in 2023, and shows growing momentum for tackling the data broker industry.

We've spent years documenting how data brokers collect and sell detailed personal information about nearly every American, usually without their knowledge. These companies maintain databases that can enable everything from financial scams targeting the elderly to serious threats to our national security. And when their security fails - like in the recent National Public Data breach that exposed nearly 3 billion consumers' records - the consequences can be devastating.

The Nebraska Delete Act offers a practical fix. Instead of forcing people to hunt down hundreds of data brokers one by one, the bill requires brokers to register with the state and create a single website where Nebraskans can tell all registered brokers to delete their data at once.
